- Students can access a fantastic amount of information through the
internet, but much of it is invalid, inappropriate or even indecent.
- Parents have a right to expect that students at school will only be
exposed to appropriate online and offline content.

- Make sure each student has an internet usage permission form signed by a
parent before allowing online use.
- Teach each student how to effectively use child friendly search engines,
such as Yahooligans, to find the information needed.
- Instruct all students in the rules for internet usage at your school.

- Teach students how to tell whether a specific site has valid and
accurate information.
- Make sure your students know whether e-mail or chat is allowed at your
school.
- Instruct your students in what are legal and illegal internet behaviors,
ie. copying music, photos, text, etc.

- All students should be taught internet safety strategies to use whenever
they are online as well as internet manners or “netiquette”.
- Make sure all student internet usage is monitored by a responsible
adult.
- Put computers in your room in a place where you can easily see what
sites are being accessed.

- Let students know that you will be checking the browser to see exactly
what sites they have been accessing, (and do check it.)
- Penalties should be established for inappropriate online use.
- Model appropriate internet behavior for your students. Your actions
speak louder than words.

- If we all follow the guidelines listed your students will have a safe,
positive and productive experience online at school.
