"One Book, One School."

In Howard Bishop there is a program called "One Book, One School". It is when the WHOLE school reads the same book. This year we are reading "The Journal of Biddy Owens, The Negro Leagues" by Walter Dean Myers.

About the Author:

Walter dean Myers is an award winning author of fiction, non-fiction, and poetry for young people. Walter Dean Myers won the Michael L. Printz Award, which is the highest literary achievement books for young adults. Some of his books like "Harlem" was illustrated by his son Christopher Myers. When he was young Walter Dean Myers played sandlot games but couldn't hit for 2 cents.

About the book:

Setting: Birmingham, Alabama, 1948

Who is Biddy Owens:

Biddy Owens is a 17 year old guy who is the material manager or the person who takes care of the bats and balls and everything else in baseball. Biddy Owens works for The Birmingham Black Barons and hopes to become a professional baseball player one day. He goes on long road trips with the team and suffers and celebrates the same losses and wins the team goes through. He has one younger sister named Rachel, A mom, a dad, and Aunt Jack.

Plot:

The main plot of the story when The Birmingham Black Barons go on to the championships and at first they loose many losses but then they try harder and eventually win.
