| The World of Rock According to Chris |
According to Chris Shaw, rock is the heart of all music. From 50's rock and roll to 2008 rock, the genre itself has been the soul of all music. All music branches off of rock and roll.
Rock and roll began with rockabilly, the result when country and blues collide. In the 50's, it evolved into rock and roll with Elvis Presley and Jerry Lee Lewis. Hits like "Great Balls of Fire" and "Heartbreak Hotel" were some early rock hits.
In about 1953, a man named Chuck Berry came out with a song called "Jonny B. Good". It had thumbs up written all over it. This is where The Rolling Stones' Keith Richards got his inspiration.
In the 60's, rock was at it's highest point. A "Hippiefest" happened in a town called Woodstock in California. It was an outdoor concert with musicians like Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, the Who, and more played, surrounded by people loaded on acid and cocaine, listening to music, in harmony.
The Beatles were popular in this time period, selling over 5 million albums. Eric Clapton was just starting to get popular in this time, in a band called The Yardbirds, touring with the Beatles and the Rolling Stones. The Doors were big in this era as well.
In about '66, a band called Cream was known as "the worlds first super-group." With songs like "Sunshine of Your Love", no one could stop them. Unfortunately, the band broke up in about 1970, the year the Beatles broke up because of John Lennon's assassination.
A new band was coming popular called Black Sabbath. They were a great group with singer Ozzy Osbourne and guitarist Tony Iommi. Hits like "Paranoid" and "Iron Man" were rockin' college dorms and arenas. In about 1980, Ozzy left Sabbath, and went for his solo career.
Led Zeppelin was kicking off with their debute album Led Zeppelin I through Houses of the Holy. Six whole albums giving the members the money and fame they've always wanted, along with the "Zoso-jet".
In the '80's, an instrument began to make its appearance; the synthesizer. In pop music like Madonna, everyone was loving synths. A band named Mettalica was topping charts like cheese on pizza with The Black Album. Same goes with Van Halen with the album 1984, and AC/DC's Back in Black. Almost all of the songs on these two albums were in the top 40 list in the 80's.
Hip-Hop was starting to take off in the 80's with Snoop Doggy Dog and Dr. Dre. Rock was yet to find out that it would be almost taken over...
In the 90's, grunge was the genre for this period, the best known grunge band being Nirvana. But in 1994, a band called Pantera knew metal was fading away, and it was their job to bring it back. Guitarist Dimebag Darrell created the heaviest riff in history with only two notes.
It's the new millennium and not up to a good start for rock. First, Hip-Hop is what everyone wanted to listen to now. Second, those planes crashed into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, and that Pennsylvania field. And lastly, in 2002, at their last show, Dimebag Darrell was assassinated because of the breakup of Pantera. Thank Heavens that the other members of the band weren't killed.
And in 2006, a band named Panic! At The Disco literally got famous overnight. Thanks to Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz, he signed them to Decaydence records and Fueled By Ramen records. Now, with their sophomore album, Pretty. Odd, rock is ready to come back and get better than ever.
