because the Wright Brother did this we have flight today. But they did many runs and many tests to create the first succesful manned plane. But throughout the years planes have gotten better and better. They have been able to use jets on more modern planes which makes them faster and more powerful. The jet is interesting but i will tell you how a internal combustion engine works.

Air and fuel are pulled down as the crank shaft is lowered. The air and fuel are compressed. The piston fires making an explosion in the cylinder that pushes the piston down. After the gas is used the piston pushes out the burned gas.

Now a jet engine works in a very different way
