On this site you will find many useful items about the content, policies, and supporting materials for your course. Please visit often to see what's been changed or added. Let me know if there are items you would like me to add here, as I am always eager for suggestions and input. You may contact me at brookseh@gm.sbac.edu

Class Rules
We will follow these general concepts in class to create a successful learning
environment:
BE PROMPT
BE PREPARED
BE POLITE
BE PRODUCTIVE
BE POSITIVE
BE PATIENT
Discipline Procedures
The sixth grade team follows the same general procedure in dealing with
infractions of classroom and/or school rules
* 1st infraction = verbal warning
* 2nd infraction = time out, lunch detention, and/or
phone call home
* 3rd infraction = after school detention
* 4th infraction = dean referral
Homework Policies
In-class and home practice is vital to success in
mathematics. Homework will be assigned 3-4 days per week. It's the student's
responsibility to engage in these activities and to self-check their
understanding of the skills and concepts covered. On most days, students will
have several minutes in class to begin the homework assignment and make sure
they can continue the work independently at home. Students are expected to
complete ALL of the homework sets assigned. Parents will be notified if
a student fails to complete homework regularly.
The following guidelines must be followed in order to
receive full credit on homework assignments:
* The student's first and last name, date, and class
period appears in the upper right-hand corner.
* The assignment title (ex. pg. 123 #2-18 even)
appears on the top line of the paper.
* The assignment is completed in pencil only.
* Each assigned problem has been copied as it appears
in the text and worked to completion. Assignments
containing answers only will not be accepted.
Test Preparation Tips
Math
lessons often teach you how to perform a skill or procedure. This is harder
than just recalling facts. Therefore, students often have to spend more
time preparing for assessments in math than for other subjects. I will direct
students to appropriate review materials before each test. Extra problems can
also be found in the textbook at the end of each lesson covered and on the
textbook website. Reviewing problems covered in class and on homework
assignments is also helpful. Make sure that you can correctly solve each
problem type that was covered by practicing several examples. Answers to
selected exercises appear in the back of the text so you can check yourself and
decide if you are prepared for the quiz or test.
Grading
The grading scale for the middle grades is as follows:
A = 90 -100
B = 80 - 89
C = 70 - 79
D = 60 - 69
F = 0 - 59
Grades for this course are calculated according to the following percentages.
Tests = 40%
Quizzes/Vocabulary = 20%
Homework/Classwork = 20%
Warm-up Activities = 10%
Exit Quizzes = 10%
Tutoring Information
Some students may benefit from outside support in math this year. There
are a few companies in Gainesville that offer tutoring services such as Kumon,
Tutoring Zone, and Sylvan Learning Center. There may also be student
tutors available through Santa Fe High School who are mostly students seeking to
fulfill their required volunteer hours. I also have a short list of
local individuals, below, who have notified me of their interest in tutoring and
gave permission to appear here:
Students:
* Katie Linkous (386) 454-0214,

Notebooks
Students are required to keep a class notebook for this course. A 3-ring
binder that is about 1 - 1.5 inches wide will be the best choice. You will
also need a set of 5-tab dividers labeled for the sections below:
- Class Information and Handouts
- Notes
- Homework/Classwork
- Quizzes/Tests
- Vocabulary
It is the student's responsibility to keep all class materials organized. This is a skill that will vital to success in high school and beyond. I will check notebooks periodically to ensure proper organization. Please do not dispose of any work or course materials throughout the year. If your notebook becomes too full, carefully remove some of the older work and keep them in a safe place.
