Planner/Agenda

• check daily/weekly
• make sure your child follows through in getting red circles completed and signed off
• encourage neat handwriting so everyone can read it

HW

• remind of purpose and 3rd grade policy of 30-45min of independent HW/night
• set a timer
• provide a quiet study area

Responsibility

• allow your child to think for themselves (even if it hurts a little)
• provide a balance of negative and positive consequences for the choices they make
• put up a "Have You?" checklist in important places ex. in the bathroom-Have You? 1)brushed your teeth 2)put dirty clothes in hamper ex. in the study area-Have You? 1)reread your agenda for HW assignments 2) completed all assignments 3) put your assignments back into your notebook ex. by the door you leave in the morning-Have You? 1)got your back pack with everything in it 2) got your lunch 3) packed your jacket, glasses, clothes for dance/karate class etc. *these checklists work great anywhere your child needs a reminder and all you have to say is "Have You?"

Empowering Choices

• people need to be able to make choices to feel worthy and important
• offer 2 choices to let your child feel empowered ex. Do you want to do your HW now or after snack? Do you want apples or grapes with your sandwich? (carefully think through your choices first as they have to be equally balanced and you have to be OK with either choice they make-see Love and Logic below for more info)
