Reading - This year we will again use the Open Court/SRA series. This research based curriculum incorporates reading, spelling, language, and writing into one complete program. Each unit of study in our reading anthology centers on a theme: Cooperation and Competition, Astronomy, Heritage, and Becoming a New Nation. Every student will also be required to read seven of the Sunshine State Readers and pass the Accelerated Reader quiz for each.
Novels will also be used to supplement the reading series.

Language - Grammar skills are also introduced in the Open Court series workbook. I usually introduce a skill on Monday and they practice it over the course of the week. You may see homework in the workbook.

Writing - Students write letters weekly in their homeroom class. Those letters are addressed to that week's Lawton Leader. In Language Arts we focus on writing poetry, friendly letters, thank you notes, journals, and pursuasive papers throughout the year.

Language grades are pulled from the last three areas.

Our weekly spelling lists are compiled from the reading anthology. Pretests are taken on Fridays. Assignments throughout the week are from their Spelling folders. Tests are given on Thursdays. Spelling homework and tests will be completed in cursive.

Spelling grades are pulled from both assignments and tests.
