October 2006 |
Dear Chiles Parents,
I am so delighted that fall has arrived, and not a moment too
soon. This is my favorite season with warm days and chilly
nights.
Every year, I remember that this is why we live in Florida.
However, the weather isn’t the only thing changing these
days. We’ve all learned by now that Mrs. Mullally has
announced her retirement at the end of December, and although
her presence will be missed at Lawton Chiles, we all share
the same sentiment when we congratulate her for a successful
career in education; we thank her for the lasting impact she’s
made on our children’s lives; and we wish her well in
this next chapter of her life.
The PTA will be honoring Mrs. Mullally on Thursday, December 7
at 7:00 p.m. in the Lawton Chiles Cafeteria. We hope that you,
the parents of our school, will join us then to show our gratitude
to Mrs. Mullally for all that she has done for our children during
her years here. Light refreshments and conversation will follow
a brief meeting. Babysitting will not be available and we request
that you make arrangements for childcare for this special evening.
Mrs. Mullally has requested that donations be made to the Ann Mullally
Professional Development Scholarship through the Alachua County
Public Schools Foundation in lieu of gifts. This scholarship will
fund conferences for teachers and education support professionals,
and in turn, her legacy as an advocate for all children will continue
in Alachua County.
.Also on the evening of December 7th we will be introducing the
new Principal. As we are wishing Mrs. Mullally farewell, we would
like to extend a warm welcome to our new Principal. Please plan
to join us.

The cookie dough will be delivered on Wednesday, October 25,
and may be picked up in the cafeteria between 12:30 and 3:30.
Please
make sure you come that day, as we have very limited space
in the cafeteria freezer to store items that are not picked
up.
We were pleased with the Fall Family Night with Shana Banana
earlier this month. Shana performed for about an hour with
songs encouraging
nutritious eating and exercise, and she had the children moving
around and dancing. The Peaceful Playground was open as well, and
a great dinner from Subway rounded out the evening. Special thanks
to Keith Massey from Subway, and Brad Womble from Planet Smoothie
for their participation. Also, thanks to Isabel Eberly from Sam’s
Club for donating funds to offset our expense for pretzels, cookies,
and water, and to Mr. West from Publix at Market Place for greatly
discounting the soft drinks. We are very fortunate to have the
support of the businesses in the area, and hope that you all will
take the time to visit these businesses and thank them as well.
On Tuesday, November 14, from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., we will have
Math Night at Publix, giving our students the opportunity to “shop” at
Publix, and solve real life math problems. There will be age appropriate
problems for them to work on, and they will receive a cookie when
they complete their paper. A drawing for a $25 Publix gift card
will be held at the end of the evening. We had about 75 families
join us last year, and it was educational and fun for everyone.
Parents can also use this time to shop while their children are
occupied. We hope you will all put this on your calendars and plan
to join us.
Thanks to everyone for their participation and support of our school.
