As we start a new school year, I encourage each of you to become actively involved in your child’s education. On behalf of the faculty and staff, we are asking parents and community members to support our school-wide goals:
- Improve student performance in Reading, Writing, Math, and Science.Review homework and classwork with your childdaily. Parents should limittheamount of time children spend watching TV, playingvideo games, and using the computer. All children should read a minimum of 20-30 minutes each day.
- Improve the daily attendance rate-When students are tardy or absent, they miss valuable instructional time and often perform poorly in school.
- Decrease the number of out of school suspensions – Please encourage your child to follow the Student Code of Conduct and the school’s discipline plan.
- Increase parental involvement – Meet your child’s teacher, attend parent conferences and school-related activities, and volunteer in the school. Your child needs you and the school needs you!
The school is comprised of 442 students and 47 instructional staff members. This year grade levels will not departmentalize; homeroom teachers will teach their homeroom students all subject areas. Five additional teachers have been hired to provide intensive Reading and Math support to students daily. This is in addition to the required 90 minute Reading block. After School Tutoring will be provided on Tuesdays and Thursdays to students needing additional support. The School-wide Discipline Plan has been revised by the Discipline Committee. An additional full-time Literacy/Reading Coach and Data Coach have been hired to support teachers in the classroom. A Technology team will also be on campus weekly to assist in the implementation of Reading and Math software programs. Finally, parents will not be allowed to check out their child/children between 1:15 -1:45 p.m. and after 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday. Children should only be checked out early for doctors’ appointments or family emergencies. Please help us protect the instructional time by arriving on time and allowing your child to remain in class until the end of the school day.
To learn more about our school-wide plan and to meet your child’s teacher, please join us for our annual Open House on Wednesday, September 2, @ 6:30 p.m. in the John Dukes, Jr. Multi-Purpose Building.
Thank you for your support and cooperation as we work together to improve the academic performance of our students.
Sincerely,
Donna M. Jones
Principal
