What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader (AR) is a
computer-based reading management program giving educators a simple
method of examining various forms of guided reading practice.
The program is one assessment tool assisting teachers with
information to help students gradually transform into successful,
and expectantly life-long readers.
How AR Works:
- Children check out AR Books from
the Media Center. These books should be in their "zip
range". The AR List denotes the zip range on the BL
or Book Level Column. Children can ask their homeroom
teacher or the Media Specialist for additional information or
help.
- Children take an AR Computer Test
to test their reading comprehension in class.
- Children earn points for
incentives. Each book has a point value on the AR List and
the book's green stickers.
- Children are rewarded, in stages,
for earning additional AR Points.
What parents can do to help our
children read better:
- Promote reading everywhere for
your child. Help them take advantage of reading books at
school and the many opportunities to read outside of school.
Take them to the library whenever possible. Create a home
library with attractive books.
- Support them in reading books on,
or, where possible, above their level.
- Make opportunities for children
to read to you or someone at home. Please, take
the time.
- Be happy for them and
occasionally reward them for their success with reading.
DO NOT LET A GOLDEN MOMENT PASS YOU BY!
Thanks, parents, and happy reading
children!!!
