Glen Springs strives to meet the objectives set by the School Board of
Alachua County and the State of Florida Sunshine State Objectives in all
subject areas including reading, math, science, social studies, language arts,
writing, art, physical education, music, and computers.
Writing, spelling, handwriting, science, social studies, and health are
taught at all grade levels, kindergarten through grade 5. Many objectives are
met using a multitude of "hands-on" materials and activities. Basal textbooks
are also available for use in spelling, social studies, and science. Social
studies and science content is also covered in the reading program.
The Curriculum Resource Teacher (CRT) serves as a resource to classroom
teachers, in order to enhance their success in meeting the needs of the
students. The CRT assists in the development and implementation of curriculum
at the school level in accordance with state, district, and school-level
objectives and guidelines. management and dissemination of instructional
materials and coordination of the school-wide testing program are also the
responsibility of the CRT.

Reading
|
Glen Springs Elementary uses a balanced approach to
reading. The county adopted reading series, Harcourt Trophies, and a variety
of literature genres are used throughout the day. To access activities and

Students who need additional support in reading are assisted through
tutors, resource teachers, or other volunteers.
The scope and sequence of
skills in the Harcourt basal series are followed at all grade levels. The
basal series in reading are supplemented with literature. Teachers read on a regular
basis to students and students are engaged daily in independent reading
activities.

Math
|
|
Teachers at Glen Springs Elementary School will teach the Sunshine
State Standards for math in every grade, while endeavoring to increase
student understanding of math through increased use of manipulatives in all
grades.
The county adopted math series, Harcourt Brace Math Advantage, is used
in kindergarten through fifth grade. Students who are served in the
exceptional education department use a variety of materials, depending on
student need, including SRA Connecting Math, Harcourt Brace Math Advantage
and Touch Math.
The Harcourt Brace Math Advantage Program
provides the structure of the math program at Glen Springs in grades K-5.
This program is supplemented by manipulatives, math kits, problem solving materials, and FCAT
preparatory materials. |
Writing
All students receive instruction in the writing process, daily,
as appropriate for his/her grade. Students in fourth grade are assessed using
the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) for writing. |

Grade Reporting
Report cards are distributed every nine weeks in grades 1-5. The
first kindergarten report card will be sent home at the end of the first
semester and every nine weeks thereafter. Interim reports may be sent at the mid point in a grading period for children whose grades are dropping
one or more letter grades.
