To be successful in school, children must read. We believe that to become good readers, children must have early access to books, and should be read to on a frequent, regular basis. Parents reading to children on a daily basis is one of the most important factors in helping them become fluent in reading. Toward this end, the Glen Springs Media Center offers the following services:

A Daily Opportunity for Checking Out Books

Kindergarteners may check out one book at a time for a period of two weeks, but may bring the book back as soon as they finish it, and get a new one if they wish. Grades 1-5 may check out two books for a period of two weeks.

Patron Accounts for Parents

You may check out books in your own name to read to your children, or you may want to take advantage of some of our professional books on parenting or reading, etc.

Video Taping of Student Plays

We video tape all student productions and sell the tapes for $6. All profits are used to buy more materials for the media center.

Damaged Books

We try to teach the children to respect and take care of books. It helps if children can have a special place to put library books that is out of the reach of younger brothers and sisters and away from crayons or pencils.

If a book is damaged, written in or colored in, you will be responsible for paying for it so that we can replace it. As you probably already know, books are presently very expensive. It is not unusual for an average book to cost $20 or more. So anything we can do to prevent loss or damage will help us all.

Resource Services

Suggestions, bibliographies, and materials as requested are provided for teachers. Materials are secured and coordinated from Instructional Media Services. In-service on using new equipment is provided. Small groups sent for research are supervised. The faculty is informed of new materials and the latest developments with media presentations. Purchases are coordinated for curriculum needs and the collections is kept current through weeding. A up-to-date, accurate record keeping of circulation and inventory is maintained. A variety of methods are used to support teaches in promoting reading.
