Classroom rules for Ms. McLaurin's
First Grade Class

During the first 2 weeks of school, rules for classroom learning are modeled and practiced.  Every child in my class is expected to learn and obey the following rules:

  • Be a good listener.  Follow directions.

  • Keep hands and feet to self.

  • Work quietly.  Raise hand to speak and wait to be called on.  Learn self-control and learn to wait turn for teacher, as well as, classmates.

  • Take care of people and property.

  •  Work Hard!

  • Be polite and respectful to all students and adults at Wiles Elementary.

After one reminder from the teacher to follow rules, a student must "flip strips" if he/she  continues to break the rules and stop instruction.  "Don't Flip Your Strips" works like this:

1.  All students start the day on "green": Super Students!.
2. After a verbal reminder from the teacher and continued misbehavior- The student flips one strip to "yellow".  There is no consequence, just a warning to stop what you are doing and think about your behavior .
3.   "Orange" is the 3rd reminder from the teacher, and it means the student must sit out from free play for 5 minutes to think about how to change his/her behavior.
 4.  The 4th warning is "red" .   The consequence is missing the entire free play time to think about  the needed change in behavior.
5.  The 5th warning is "blue".  At this time the student has interrupted the lessons 5 times during the day and needs assistance from the Parents  and our Behavior Resource Teacher to improve.
When ALL children follow the rules, ALL children can learn!

Good Behavior Celebrations:

Every Wednesday afternoon, first graders celebrate the good manners and great work habits of their first grade friends  (exception: short weeks due to school holidays).  Together we say a chant about "Souper Kids"  and then each first grade teacher tells why the selected student was chosen to be "Souper Kid" for the week. The child stands in front of his/her peers and receives a can of soup to sit on their desktop, a certificate and the applause from the entire grade level!  We know there is a "Souper Kid" inside of each first grader and look forward to celebrating them all!

Our Guidance Counselor sponsors a "Wiles Leader" program for the whole school.  Each month four Wiles Leaders are selected from every classroom: responsible, caring, honest and hard working.  A picture of these leaders is posted in the hallway by the office, a badge is given to each leader to wear and Dr. Buys puts their names in her Weekly Letter to Parents.  We love to celebrate our children who have developed these excellent qualities!

Before School Routines

Morning supervision begins in the first grade Centrium at 7:20. If you arrive before 7:20, please wait outside the Centrum doors with your child until the morning supervision teacher is on duty. Written messages for your child’s teacher may be left with the teacher on duty.

The first bell rings at 7:40. At this time children are able to go into their classrooms. The tardy bell rings at 7:45 and class work begins promptly. If a child arrives after the tardy bell, he/she should check in at the front office before coming to the classroom.

The first day of school parents may bring their child to the classroom. To prevent tears, parents should then quickly say their good-byes. It is generally helpful to the child if parents say good-bye at the classroom door.

After the first day, please leave your child at the double doors that lead into the first grade Centrum. We have found that children have an easier time saying goodbye at the double doors than in front of their peers.  There will be adult supervision for children who need to arrive between 7:20 and 7:40 in the first grade Centrum.

After School Routines

At the end of the day I will escort children to two main areas for after school dismissal:

1.  Under the red roof at the front of the school
This area is for car riders and walkers who meet older siblings or parents to walk home.

2.  Bus circle in front of the cafeteria
This area is for ALL bus riders (school bus, O2B, YMCA) and Wiles After School Care (EDEP).

School dismissal is 1:40 on Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and at 12:30 on Wednesday.  We are working right up until the bell rings, so please keep "early check out" for emergencies only.

Please note-  For the safety of our children:
Children will NOT be allowed to change routines unless the parent has sent a written note detailing the changes or has called the school office with the changes.  Parents need to call as early as possible if there are changes to be made.

Please be sure your child understands exactly where they are to go each afternoon.  Children may be confused and  misunderstand changes in routines and directions, so it's best to keep them to a minimum if possible.  With your help, teachers can ensure that 600+ children get home safely every day.  Thanks!
