2	Tools Need Rules The internet is a fascinating and valuable tool that your children will enjoy using, … but like all tools you have to know how to use it safely. As parents we have a duty to make sure our children know the rules to keep safe on the internet.
3	1. Set Some Limits Develop clear, simple rules for internet use. Post these near the computer. Make sure everyone understands the rules and agrees to abide by them. You may want to have a signed safety pledge, (see http://www.safekids.com/contract_kid.htm for an example).
4	2. Be Aware Put the computer in a public area of your home. Make using the internet a family activity. Have children show you what they are doing. Know how to check what sites your children have been visiting. Most browsers allow this. Know who your children are e-mailing. If you suspect online “stalking” or sexual exploitation of your child report it to your local law enforcement agency right away. Become informed about computers and the internet yourself.
5	3. Head Off Problems Beforehand Have children use child friendly search engines such as Yahooligans. (See http://www.oswego.org/ocsd-web/teaching/kidsearch/kidssearch.htm) Consider using a filtering program to help prevent access to unacceptable sites. Internet accounts should be in the parents name with parents having controlling passwords, etc. Make sure children’s screen names are nondescript so your child’s screen name doesn’t identify him or her as a child.

Talk to Children about; Other computers they may be using, Websites that are not appropriate, Not giving out personal information, Not agreeing to meet someone they’ve met only online, (explain the dangers), What to do if they see something that makes them feel scared or uncomfortable, What to do if they receive e-mail that is offensive or dangerous.
7	5. The Internet is Both Good & Bad The internet can be both a wonderful tool and a dangerous intrusion into your home. Following these suggestions will make sure that your children enjoy all the benefits of online use without risks to their safety.
