Codes for Audiovisual Format 
 
The letters in red are the code for the audiovisual format
 
1. AT - Audio tapes
This includes cassettes or reels, sets of magnetic audiotape cards, such as language master cards. If an audiotape comes with a book they will be cataloged as an audiotape unless there are multiple copies of the book.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is <sound recording>
 
2. BB - Big book
This includes big books or big books with a cassette or a big book with small books.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <big book>
 
3. CD - Compact disks
This includes compact disks, (usually used for recorded music.)
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <sound recording>
 
4. CDR - CD ROM disks
This includes CD ROM disks, (multimedia or computer programs on optical media disks).
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <interactive multimedia>
 
5. COS- Computer software
This includes disks, cassettes or whatever.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <computer software>
 
6. DUP - Duplicating masters
This includes copy masters/duplicating masters fluid or photo.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <duplicating master>
 
7. DVD - Digital video disk
This includes all video disks intended to be played on a DVD player.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <digital video disk>
 
8. F - Films
This includes motion pictures - 16mm or 8 mm reel to reel, not film loops.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <motion picture>
 
9. FL - Film loops
This includes only film loops, (continuously cycling film that repeats itself.)
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <film loop>
 
10. FS - Filmstrip, captioned
This includes filmstrips without sound which have the words actually on the filmstrip.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <filmstrip captioned>
 
11. G - Games
This includes all games, puzzles, cuisinaire rods and manipulatives.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <game>
 
12. GLO - Globes
This includes all globes.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <globe>
 
13. I - Instruments
This includes microscopes, scales, measuring sticks, stop watches, magnifying glasses, liquid measures, pedometer, etc.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <instrument>
 
14. KIT - Kits
This includes a mixture of two or more of any form where one form is not predominant. If one form is an av item and the other form is a book it will be cataloged as the av item format not as a kit since the av item predominates, (unless there are a number of books with the av item in which case it will be cataloged as a kit.) Other exclusions - SRA activity kit of activity cards will be processed as PR.

15. LD - Laser disk
This includes laser disks, (large optically read disks).
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is <laser disk>
 
 
16. MAP - Maps
This includes all types of maps.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <map>
 
17. MF - Microfilm
This includes microfilm or microfiche.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <microform>
 
18. MOD - Models
This includes models, globes, miniatures, dioramas, dolls, puppets, mock-ups, flannel figures, etc.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <model>
 
19. PR - Prints
This includes study/art prints, sets of display board materials, booklets, pamphlets, books, charts, sets of flash cards, activity sheets, sets of activity cards (such as SRA kits). DO NOT INCLUDE MAP OR CARD GAMES IN THE PR CATEGORY!

20. REA - Realia
This includes realia, specimens and samples of the "real thing", including microscope slides.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <realia>
 
21. REC - Records
This includes all records.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <sound recording>
 
22. S - Slides
This includes sets of slides with or without sound.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <slide>
 
23. SFS - Sound filmstrip
This includes filmstrips with the script on a disk or tape sound recording.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <filmstrip>
 
24. T - Transparencies
This includes sets of transparencies.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <transparency>
 
25. VF - Vertical file
This includes collections of clippings, pamphlets, pictures, etc.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <vertical file>
 
26. VR - Video recordings
This includes all video recordings, cassette or reel.
The descriptor which will appear in brackets on the catalog card entry after the main entry is  <video recording>
