After the "Missing in Inventory" report has been run by the system administrator, an "Exception Report" will be run on the collection that was inventoried.
* It is critical that Exception Reports be justified!
A sample Exception Report is shown below.

*26 JUL 2000 = date exception found.
*Item has no Holdings Record. The heading of the report shows the date the report is printed, the agency and the collection. (If the report covers multiple collections, the report is divided by collection.) Below the heading is a key that explains the items on the report.
The rest of the report is divided into sections of information about each exception. Each section contains three types of information (numbered above):
Item "Before" exception: This is the item that was inventoried immediately before the corresponding exception item. (It should be shelved on the left of the exception item.) The "before" item is marked with the symbol "@" on the report. The report shows the author, title, and call number of the "before" item so you can locate the exception item on the shelf, if necessary.
NOTE: If the very first item inventoried in a group of items is an exception, a "before" item is not reported for that exception.
Exception item: This is an exception item that was found in the collection. Each exception item is marked with the symbol "***" on the report. The exception items are listed on the report in the order in which they were found during inventory. For each exception, the report shows the author, title, and call number, and the date the exception item was inventoried. It also shows a message, which states the reason for the exception. Step 8 - "Resolving Problem Items" provides a list of exception messages and possible resolutions.
"After" item: This is the item that was inventoried immediately after the corresponding exception item. (It was shelved to the right of the exception item.) The "after" item is marked with the symbol "!" on the report. The report shows the author, title and call number of the "after" item to help you locate the exception item on the shelf, if necessary.
NOTE: If the very last item inventoried in a group of items is an exception, an "after" item is not reported for that exception.
Here is a list of exception messages and possible resolutions.

Item has item status of 'Checked Out.' Resolve possible inconsistency.
Item status was changed same day Inventory was taken on this item.
A message like this is printed for items whose Inventory Action is "Report" (RPT) and whose status might be incorrect because the status was changed on the same day the item was inventoried. In response to this message, you can check the shelf for the item and verify its correct status. If the above status is incorrect, you can check in the item or manually update its status. On the other hand, it may be necessary to relocate the item.
