- Supervisor's Job -
- Provides Leadership and Direction
- Works with and coordinates with Uma Shankar to develop
technology policies for the county media program and to provide direction and
focus for technology for media specialists in the county.
- Provides direction to media specialists in implementing
district, state, and school specific goals through the media program.
- Provides guidance and support to media specialists as to
programs, media skills, and other needs through regular visits, phone calls,
e-mail and other correspondence.
- Encourages increased media use in the schools.
- Works to encourage a good working relationship between
media specialists, their principals, and county staff as well as encouraging a
high level of cooperation in implementing county policies and procedures.
- Works to encourage collaboration between teachers and media
specialists to increase learning among students.

- Public Relations
- Is an advocate for the media program with Principals and
other district administrative staff.
- Promotes good public relations for the media program.
- Is a liaison person with libraries outside of Alachua
County public school systems and professional organizations.
- Visits all schools on a regular basis.
- Conducts yearly surveys of media specialists and other
media staff.

- Management
- Manages film library, professional library, technical
processing as well as bookkeeping and reception. Directs a staff of nine,
plus OPS workers.
- Film Library - Develops and enforces circulation
policies. Selects, orders and catalogs all a.v. for the district audiovisual
library. Supervises AV library staff.
- Professional Library - Handles circulation, purchasing
of books, weeding, inventory, organization of professional library, and
develops and enforces circulation policies.
- Technical Processing - Catalogs all audiovisual materials
for the county. Supervises cataloger and technical processing staff in both
book cataloging and processing.

- Automated Circulation System - (Dynix Horizon)
- System administrator for Horizon. Maintains and
troubleshoots database. Uploads new records. Identifies and corrects bad
records among the 640, 000 holdings. Troubleshoots media specialists'
problems with Horizon. Upgrades old records to proper MARC format. Assists
with and troubleshoots each school's annual inventory. Works with Wylene
Aubut, Uma Shankar and Horizon staff to correct more serious problems.

- Information and Inservice
- Heads the committee to develop a comprehensive media
curriculum which follows Sunshine State Standards and county guidelines and
national library guidelines.
- Personally maintains a current, comprehensive online media
handbook, (over 300 p.), for media specialists.
- Provides online databases for students in every school, (ie.Gale
Resources, Worldbook Encyclopedia, Enchanted Learning, Testing and Education
Reference Center, Authors4Teen, etc.)
- Provides and arranges for inservice on media and technology
topics, plus Horizon training.
- Provides regular media update meetings for media
specialists by grade level.
- Keeps abreast of all censorship and copyright issues and
keeps media specialists informed on these issues as well.
- Disseminates current, relevant media related information to
all media specialists as needed.
- Performs information searches for district staff when
requested.

- Technical Assistance
- Provides technical assistance to media specialists and
principals when requested.

- Bid Process and Purchasing
- Assists in the Bid process for book and bindery vendors.
- Reviews requisitions for media resources for purchasing
department to verify correct bid vendors and items.
- Recommends vendors and bids for audiovisual purchasing.

- New Schools
- Provides assistance in the design of new and renovated
media centers
- Selects and purchases books and audiovisual materials for
new schools

- SACS
- Assists in and provides direction to schools going through
SACS Self-Study and SACS Visits.

- Evaluation and Record Keeping
- Maintains records of media usage, purchases, weeding, etc.
for each school
- Maintains records of items processed by the technical
processing staff.
- Prepares and maintains a budget for Instructional Media
Services.
- Prepares and maintains a budget for Special State Monies.
- Evaluates media specialists and staff in the media area.
- Provides reports reflecting media programming, use of
materials, and media holdings for all schools.
- Wylene Aubut -
- Wylene is actually under the Instructional Technology
Department but she works with Nancy Case and Uma Shankar to help solve more
serious Horizon Automated Circulation System problems as they come up.
She also works directly with Media Specialists when necessary to correct
serious Horizon problems.
