PR Makes It Happen!

1.  Smile at everyone. Keep your comments to staff positive and upbeat. BE FLEXIBLE!!!!!!!
2.  Keep a birthday list of faculty members. Put a happy birthday note in their box with a Hershey's kiss on their birthday or invite them down to the media center for coffee.
3.  Do a regular newsletter advertising all the wonderful things you are doing. If the school does a newsletter for parents, write an informative article about good things the media center is doing for each issue.
4.  Survey your faculty and students as to what they want from the media center and how well they think you are doing. Act on reasonable requests and let people know about the changes.
5.  Do a yearly "Thank you" tea for the faculty. Display new things, offer food. The faculty will love you for it.
6.  Find a way not to say "No" when faculty ask for things. If you can't do what they ask or don't feel their requests are appropriate suggest other ways to handle the problem.
7.  Offer to provide bibliographies, etc. to teachers you know are starting a unit.
8.  Collaborate with teachers to provide skills instruction.
9.  Make use of your morning news progam to advertise great things happening in the media center.
10.  Think of ways to make the faculty feel that they are included in library decision making. Ask teachers what books and av they would like you to purchase.
11.  Eat with the other teachers. Develop informal positive relationships. Talk about families, etc. not just school.
12.   Be represented at groups that impact your area. (SAC, PTA, faculty meetings, team meetings, ect.) Present positive information about the media center.
13.  Do special activities such as storytelling, booktalking, bookfairs, contests, reading promations, etc. on a regular basis. Invite parents in to see what you're doing.
14.  Make your media center look inviting. Add plants, colorful signs, student art, etc.
15.  Think of ways to make your media center more user friendly.
16.  Think of ways to make yourself more user friendly.
17.  People don't care what you know until they know that you care! Let people know that you care about their concerns.
18.  Keep your principal informed about everything going on in the media center. Invite your principal down to the media center when you are doing exciting things.
19.  If also being the technology person adversely affects how people see the media program let someone else be the technology contact.
20.  If you have to do something anyway you might as well do it with a smile.
21.  Hassle less, help more. Don't act in haste when you are upset.
22.  Strive for excellence and make sure people know when you are successful.
23.  Do a media handbook that clearly spells out in a positive manner what the staff can expect from you and what you would like from them. Make sure eveyone gets one.
24.  Make sure that rules teachers won't like come from your principal ie. copyright, etc. You don't want the job of being the policeman for the school. If you need to send out a memo on these issues go through your principal and make sure he or she signs it as well. This helps take you out of the role of being the bad guy and educates your principal on these issues.
25.  Send in Public Service Announcements to news agencies about special things happening in your media center.
