Reading Counts from Scholastic Publishing Company is a software program that manages and motivates independent reading school-wide. After reading a book that is on Metcalfe's Reading Counts database, the student can take a test in one of several places on campus. If the student achieves a 70% or better on the test they have passed and earn a minimum of 1 point. The number of points for a book is based on the length of the book, the difficulty of the vocabulary and the complexity of the plot. When students earn their first 10 points they join Team Read, are recognized on Morning Announcements and have their picture taken and placed on the Team Read bulletin board in the Media Center as a JV Reader. As students earn more points they move from JV Reader (10 - 49 points) to Varisty Reader (50 - 99 points) to All Star Reader (100 - 199 points) and finally to the Hall of Fame at 200 points and up. Along the way they are recognized at 10 point intervals. Prizes vary but are awarded at 10 point intervals, also, with special prizes when a student reaches the next level of Team Read. There is a very special prize for overall high point reader at the end of the school year. Please talk to your child's teacher or Miss Rose, the Media Specialist, for more details.
