SCIENCE
ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCE
Grade 11 & 12 Prerequisite: Biology
This course provides students with a study of man's
interaction with the environment. The content includes but is not limited
to: forms of pollution, conservation, environmental planning and policy,
public land usages, population dynamics, and major forms of energy.
Laboratory investigations are an integral part of the course.
Advanced
Placement Environmental Science
Grades:
9-12 Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation
College level course which emphasizes the
ecological, chemical, physical and biological dimensions of man's
interaction with his environment. Extensive lab work, field work and
outside reading is required. Prepares students for the AP Environmental
Science exam.
Earth/Space Honors
Grade 9 Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation
This course provides opportunities for
students to develop comprehensive concepts basic to the earth, its
materials, processes, history, and environment in space. Laboratory
investigations are an integral part of this course.
BIOLOGY 1
Grade 10 Prerequisite: None
This course provides students with general exploratory
experiences and activities in the fundamental concepts of life. It expands
and refines the biological concepts that were introduced in the elementary
and the junior high/middle school, and presents additional facts,
concepts, and generalizations. The content includes, but is not limited
to, use of the scientific method, scientific measurement, laboratory
safety and use of apparatus, cell biology, cell reproduction, basic
principals of genetics, biological changes through time, classification
and taxonomy, microbiology, structure and function of plants, structure
and function of animals, structure and function of the human body, and
ecological relationships. Laboratory investigations are an integral part
of this course.
BIOLOGY 1 HONORS
Grade 9 & 10 Prerequisite: Teacher Approval
This course provides students with general exploratory
experiences and activities in the fundamental concepts of life. It expands
the biological concepts that were introduced in the elementary and junior
high/middle school, and presents additional facts, concepts, and
generalizations. The content includes, but is not limited to, scientific
method, scientific measurement, laboratory safety and use of laboratory
apparatus, biochemistry, cell biology, cell reproduction, genetics,
biological changes through time, classification and taxonomy,
microorganisms and disease, structure and function of plants, structure
and function of animals, human anatomy and physiology, and ecological
relationships. Laboratory investigations are an integral part of this
course.
ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY
Grade 10, 11, & 12 Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation
This course provides students with advanced studies and
activities in the structures and functions of the components of the human
body. The content includes, but is not limited to, anatomical terminology,
cells and tissues, the integumentary system, the skeletal system, the
muscular system, the nervous system, special sensory organs, the endocrine
system, the circulatory system, the respiratory system, the digestive
system, the excretory (urinary) system, the reproductive system,
homeostasis, disease processes, immune response, and inheritance,
molecular, cellular, organismal, mutations and genetic disorders.
Laboratory investigations are an integral part of the course.
INTEGRATED SCIENCE 1
Grade 9 Prerequisite: None
This purpose of this course is to develop comprehensive
concepts and to do investigative studies of concepts basic to earth, its
materials, processes, and history and environment in space. This course
will also provide students with investigative studies of the theories and
laws associated with the natural physical and chemical properties of
matter and familiarize students with human growth and development within
the context of our society.
CHEMISTRY 1
Grade 10, 11, & 12 Prerequisite: A working knowledge of decimals,
percentages, and ratios
This course provides students with the study of
composition, properties, and changes associated with matter. The content
includes, but is not limited to, classification and structure of matter,
atomic theory, periodic table, bonding, chemical formulas, chemical
reactions and balanced equations, behavior of gases, physical changes,
acids, bases and salts, and energy associated with physical and chemical
changes. Laboratory activities are an integral part of the course.
CHEMISTRY 1 HONORS
Grade 10 & 11 Prerequisites: Bio 1, Alg 1 & Teacher
Recommendation
This course provides students with a rigorous study of
composition, properties, and changes associated with matter. The content
includes, but is not limited to, heat, changes of matter, atomic theory,
periodic table, bonding formulas and equations, mole concept, gas laws,
energy and order, reaction rates and equilibrium, solutions, acids, bases,
salts, nuclear chemistry, electrochemistry, and organic chemistry.
Laboratory activities are an integral part of the course.
PHYSICS 1 HONORS
Grade 11 & 12 Prerequisite: Teacher Recommendation & Trig
This course provides students with a rigorous
introductory study of the theories and laws governing the interaction of
matter, energy, and the forces of nature. The content includes, but is not
limited to, kinematics, dynamics, energy, work and power, heat and
thermodynamics, wave characteristics, light, electricity, magnetism,
nuclear physics, and sound. Laboratory investigations are an integral part
of this course.
