Spanish I introduces students to the Spanish language and culture and develops communication skills and cross-cultural understanding. Specific content includes skills in listening and speaking, with special attention to pronunciation. An introduction to reading and writing is included as well as the fundamentals of grammar and culture.

Spanish II reinforces fundamental skills acquired by students in Spanish I. The course develops increased listening, speaking, reading and writing skills, as well as cultural awareness. Reading and writing receive emphasis while oral communication remains the primary objective. This course continues the cultural survey of Spanish-speaking people.

The purpose of Spanish III is to master and expand the skills acquired by students in Spanish II. Vocabulary and conversational skills are expanded through discussions based on selected readings. Students' acquisition of grammatical concepts is strengthened by analyzing reading selections. Contemporary vocabulary stresses activities which are important to everyday life of Spanish-speaking people.

Spanish IV expands the skills acquired by students in Spanish III. More advanced language structures and idiomatic expressions are studied with emphasis on conversational skills. There is additional growth in vocabulary for practical purposes including writing. Reading selections are varied and taken from newspapers, magazines, and literary works.

Spanish V develops communication skills through presentation of oral reports on literary and cultural topics, current events, and personal experiences. Reading selections include newspapers, magazine articles, adaptations of short stories, and surveys of Spanish literature. Writing is enhanced through compositions using correct language structures.
