Scholastic/Lexus
Environmental Challenge
Five students, here at Newberry High School, entered the Scholastic/Lexus
Environmental Challenge. They won the land and the air
challenge which means they've been invited to participate in the final
project. This one is worth $11,000 for each of the students involved, and
they will be earning money for Newberry High School's science
department as well. So far, they have earned a total of $1,000 for the
science department and for each of them.
On April 2, 2008,
our very own Newberry Environmental Girls were recognized yet again but
this time it was a bit more serious. Our girls were
informed that they had just won a $7,000 scholarship for their
environmental efforts and they couldn't be more pleased. Not only
did they win scholarships for themselves, but they also won for our school
$10,000 and for the science department $5,000. After all of the hard
work put into this project the girls are still going to continue their
efforts for our environment, even though it is technically over. The
next big plan involves giving out more reusable bags, and they will
continue their community efforts, so I hope everyone will join our ladies
in this vital effort for our planet.
Lexus and Scholastic are pleased to announce the winners of the 2007-2008
Lexus Environmental Challenge!
Newberry Environmental Girls - Florida
The Newberry Environmental Girls chose sustainable practices as their
central focus, and developed a high school curriculum so that other
students could spread the word nationwide about conserving the Earth's
depleting resources. (This is from the Lexus/Scholastic web page.)

A description by one of the participants
follows:
I'd like to introduce you
to a team of five Newberry High School Seniors, who have made the
environment their top priority. They are Ashley Hughes, Anna
Thrasher, Crystal Hall, Joyce Heckerman, and then there's me, Dakota
Herrera. We have been working together on small challenges to try
and make our community a better place. Our first step was to start a
plastic bottling recycling program here at NHS, and once we fulfilled that
action, we were only more excited about doing more for our community.
Once our plastic bottle recycling was on its feet, we started making
videos for public service announcements about saving energy and conserving
water. We also taught 2 classes at Newberry Elementary school about
air pollution. Currently we are planting trees around our campus to
help with the large amounts of CO admissions that
our students and the other people of the community are off setting.
Just last week, we also taught some of the classes at NHS, the cause and
effect of CO on the environment. I feel that we are having a
positive impact on the students, here at Newberry, due to the many
comments that have been left on our blog. Please take time to click
on the buttons below the pictures to learn more about our continuing
project and feel free to make comments on our blog.
