General Information about
the 1st Grade Curriculum |
Home Folders |
Each child brings home a folder at the beginning
of each week. Classroom news and important information is included.
Reading |
Each classroom offers a
literature approach to reading while stressing phonetic skills. Parents are
urged to read daily to their child, even though he/she is becoming a fluent
reader. A parent's interest in reading emphasizes its importance and
provides both parent and child with precious moments. The single, most
important thing a parent can do to help a child learn to read is to read
aloud daily. |
Language Arts |
The
language art areas of the curriculum are enhanced and integrated with
literature. Journal writing is encouraged daily or weekly throughout
our first grade classes. A sharing time is offered for each child to
bring an item from home or to simply tell about a personal experience. |
Math |
| Our first
grade math program attempts to foster creative and divergent thinking,
rather than the idea that math is finding the "right" answer, through the
use of our adopted series and hands-on activities. |
Assessment |
First Grade students are assessed on reading, math and
writing skills. Individual skill and performance based assessment is used.
Results are shared with parents.

Telephone conferences may also take place. |
