After School Dismissal Procedures for Kindergarten Students

Each afternoon, about five minutes before the bell rings, kindergarten children begin to get ready to go home or to day care.  Children are grouped by the method they go home.

One kindergarten teacher supervises each group of children, rotating supervision for a different group of children each week. The supervising teacher walks with the children to the area where they depart and waits with them until all children have left.

Note: Children will not be allowed to change routines unless the parent has sent a written note detailing changes or has called the school office with the changes. Parents need to call early in the day if there is a change!

To make the after school procedures as safe as possible we each have certain responsibilities.

    THE TEACHERS' RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • To assure that children go to their correct waiting area.
    • To supervise their assigned group of children until they depart.
    • To notify the school office if a child is not picked up or if problems occur with the routine procedures.

    THE SCHOOL OFFICE RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • To take parent telephone calls when after school routines change, and notify the classroom teacher of these changes in writing.

    THE PARENTS’ RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • To assure that their child's teacher is advised in writing how a child is to go home.
    • To call the school office if this plan needs to change in case of an emergency.
    • To be certain that their child understands exactly where they are to go each afternoon. Children often misunderstand changes in routines and directions may become confused. It is very important that if procedures are changing the parent reviews with the child how he/she is going home.
•To assure their child is picked up promptly after school dismisses.

    THE CHILDREN’S RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • To understand how they are to go home each day.
    • To stay in the correct transportation line after school.

Since teachers are supervising over 100 children, three-fourths of whom they do not personally know, it is imperative that children know where to go and stay in the correct place.

    RAINY DAY PROCEDURES

    • On rainy days, children who go to car pick-up, walk, or ride bikes will be kept inside the hall area by the kindergarten centrium. A teacher or safety patrol will walk children from the centrium to their cars.
    • Norton After School Care and bus procedures remain the same.
