Dress Code
On August 4, 2009, the School Board of Alachua County adopted a district standard of dress for all Alachua County Public Schools. Oak View Middle School will enforce this policy to ensure the best possible learning environment for our students. Generally, students should wear clothes which are safe, do not disturb or distract other students, and are appropriate for the learning environment.

Appropriate attire should be worn as follows:

  • Skirts, shorts, dresses, and culottes must be “mid thigh.” Mid thigh is determined by extending the arms to the sides of the body and finding the tip of the longest finger (using normal posture).
  • All clothing must be the appropriate size.
  • The waist of the garment must be worn at the top of the hip or waist.
  • Shirts and blouses must cover midriff, back, sides, and all undergarments, including bra straps, at all times.
  • Shirts and blouses should be appropriately fastened with no visible cleavage.
  • Tops must have shoulder straps that are at least two (2) inches in width.
  • Shoes must be safe and appropriate for school.

The following is not appropriate attire for school:

  • Tops that have one shoulder only, are strapless, or have spaghetti straps;
  • Pajamas, sleep pants, saggy/baggy pants;
  • Tights and spandex garments worn alone;
  • Exposed underwear; undergarments may not be visible. This includes boxer shorts;
  • Swim wear, unless part of supervised sports;
  • Clothing that is torn or has areas cut out after purchase;
  • Clothing promoting drugs, alcohol, tobacco, gang identification, weapons, and/or sexual behavior;
  • Hats or other head coverings worn during the school day without permission of the principal/designee;
  • Sunglasses worn inside the school building; or Bedroom slippers

Where there is a difference of opinion regarding interpretation of the standard of dress, the principal or the principal’s designee shall determine whether or not the dress is appropriate.
