Rod Warner

Dean of Students
soccer019nhs@aol.com
As Dean of Students at Oak View Middle School, I am here to take a proactive approach with students to ensure a safe learning environment throughout the school. I want to assist in teaching proper and appropriate behavior, which hopefully leads to a successful middle school career for all students. As dean of students I facilitate as much parental support as possible. With teachers, parents, and students working together towards the same goal - proper behavior for a safe learning environment - success is inevitable.

The School Counseling & Guidance program at Oak View Middle School is dedicated to providing a comprehensive, developmental program addressing the academic, career and personal/social needs of all students. Based on the ASCA National Model, our program is proactive in helping our students to achieve academically and personally.
The school counseling program provides individual, small, large group and school wide guidance activities that will benefit all students. Team work, goal-setting, positive decision making, interpersonal and communication skills are just a few of the topics that will be incorporated throughout the year. By working collaboratively with parents, staff and administration, we can ensure student success!
I am truly excited to begin the year and to start building relationships with all of the students and families of OVMS. Please feel free to contact me or stop by at any time

Marilyn Bishop Shaw
Literacy Coach

shawmb@gm.sbac.edu

As I enter my fourth year as literacy coach at Oak View I look forward to some new challenges and exciting possibilities. For the first time, my time is split between Oak View and Newberry High. That has more than doubled the work load, but offers us opportunities to bridge between the two schools that other schools do not have. That should pay significant dividends for our students.

My work as literacy coach isn't easily defined and things change from day to day, but my primary tasks are to:

  • Provide professional development for teachers in all content areas so they are better equipped to help students read and learn from their particular texts
  • Monitor student progress three times per year in both fluency (FCAT Reading Level 1 & 2 students) and comprehension (all students)
  • Assist in data interpretation and program design
  • Upon teacher referral, diagnose reading weaknesses and identify effective instructional strategies
  • Provide model lessons in classrooms
  • Serve as a resource, extra pair of eyes, and sounding board to teachers working to grow professionally and provide the best possible instruction for students
  • Connect teachers with materials appropriate for their instructional needs
  • Assist in school wide programs to enhance reading interest and achievement

It's hard to imagine my world without reading and I hope to help our students develop a love for reading, too.
