Driver Education

Registration opens April 12

Introduction

Welcome to the Summer Driver Education course. This short memo has been prepared to help make your experience as enjoyable, safe, and rewarding as possible. If satisfactorily completed, you will earn one half elective high school credit.

Attendance and Punctuality

It’s important that you are on time and attend every day. Summer school normally lasts about 20 days: We meet Monday-Friday, and sometimes Saturday depending on the school calendar. You must attend the session you are assigned to.

Morning or Afternoon Session

7:30 –10:45 am 1:00 – 4:15 pm

Consequences for student absences and tardiness are explained in a separate Parent Notification Memo.

Drop-Off/Pick-Up

For safety reasons, students must be dropped-off and picked-up outside the Traffic Safety Center (TSC), that is, outside the fence. Students will enter and exit the TSC on foot. Cars may enter the TSC to pick up or drop off students only in cases of inclement weather (e.g., thunderstorms)

Attire

Students must comply with the SBAC Code of Conduct for Secondary Schools. Articles of clothing that are safety hazards, such as flip-flops, are strictly prohibited during lab days. IPOD/CD headphones are also prohibited. Cell phones may only be used before or after the appropriate instructional session; violators will have their phones confiscated.

Textbooks

Each student will be issued a textbook and must bring it to class every day. You are responsible for any lost or damaged textbooks in accordance with SBAC policy.

Licensing

You need to have your Learner’s Permit with you at all times. Students without a Learner’s Permit need to comply with instructions on the reverse side of this memo.

Students Without Learner’s Permit

The Division of Driver Licenses office, located at 5830 NW 34th Street, in Gainesville, will be open________________, for the purpose of issuing summer school students a Learner’s Permit.

Session A students should report 8:00-9:15 am

Session B students should report 9:15-10:45 am

(these times may be adjusted depending on the number of students needing permits)

The parent or legal guardian must accompany the student, sign a parental consent form, and bring the following:

  1. Certified copy of Birth Certificate (raised seal – not just a photo copy), or a U.S. passport.

  2. Social Security Card, or official document issued by Social Security office verifying social security number.

  3. Glasses – if you wear glasses, you must have them to pass the vision test.

  4. Cash or check for $20. Make checks out to: Division of Driver Licenses

  5. Students must be in compliance with their school’s attendance policy.

You do not need to bring items 1 and 2 if you have a current Florida ID, and are a U.S. citizen.

Canadian Citizens must present two of the following: Canadian Driver License, Passport, or Birth Certificate.

All other Non-U.S. Citizens must bring: Valid or expired Alien Registration Card (I-151 or I-551) and secondary ID; valid I-94 card with passport or other required supporting attachment or secondary ID; valid employment authorization card (I-688B or I-766) and secondary ID. You will be issued a 30-day permit and the driver license will be mailed to you within 30 days.

If you have any questions, call the Driver License Office at 955-2111. Office hours are Monday, Wednesday and Friday 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and Tuesday and Thursday 8:00 am to 6:00 pm.
