Talbot's Mission

"To teach children in a way that promotes academic growth and life-long learning within a safe environment which recognizes the diversity of children's needs and abilities."

William S. Talbot

Talbot Elementary School was named after William S. Talbot, also known as "Tiny" Talbot.  He was 5'4", very portly and very personal.  To quote his friend and peer, Tommy Tomlinson, he was a "One Man Personnel Department".  Whether, he was serving as teacher/coach, principal or superintendent, he knew everyone by name.  He started in the Alachua school system, August 1, 1946 and retired October 31, 1980.  During his 36 years, he coached and served as Principal at Sidney Lanier when it was K-6th grade, Buchholz Jr. High and finally at GHS. He ran for Superintendent and polled the most popular votes in Alachua County elections for his first term.  He served two, four year terms as Superintendent before retiring. As Superintendent he effectively and efficiently assisted Alachua County's transition during the tumultuous years of segregation. Those who served with him have many fond memories of his effectiveness as a leader.
