LANGUAGE ARTS

IN READING
∙  
predict content and purpose of reading using the table of contents, index, heading, illustrations, graphs, captions and charts
∙   uses prefixes, suffixes, root words, multiple meanings, synonyms, antonyms, and word relationships to determine meaning and increase vocabulary
   uses problem solving strategies such as re-reading, summarizing and class discussion
   reads to determine main idea, supporting details, and to arrange events in sequence
∙   identifies the author’s purpose in a simple text
∙   identifies personal preferences in fiction and nonfiction reading
∙   reads and organizes information for a variety of purposes, such as making a report or performing an authentic task
   recognizes the difference between fact and opinion
   recognizes the use of comparison and contrast in text selects and uses reference material to gather information

IN WRITING
   prepares for writing by identifying the purpose for writing, focusing on a central idea with supporting details
   organizes information using a variety of pre-writing strategies
∙   drafts and revises writing to show a clear beginning, an organizational pattern using transitional devices, and endings that bring closure
   revises papers for ideas, organization, voice, word choice, and sentence fluency
   uses figurative language and imagery
   edits final documents for spelling, grammar, capitalization and punctuation
∙   uses the dictionary, glossary and thesaurus to check spelling, meaning and synonyms
∙   writes notes, comments, observations, and organizes the information using alphabetical and numerical systems

   uses appropriate geometric vocabulary to write a description of 2 dimensional and/or 3 dimensional shapes

   predicts, illustrates and verifies which figures could result from a reflection (flip), translation (slide), or rotation (turn) of a given figure
∙   identifies and plots positive ordered pairs on a graph

IN ALGEBRAIC THINKING
   describes a wide variety of patterns and relationships through models using algebraic symbols
   generalizes a pattern
   uses informal methods (physical models and graphs) to solve real-world problems involving equations and inequalities

IN DATA ANALYSIS AND PROBABILITY
   solves problems by generating, collecting, organizing, and analyzing data using bar graphs, circle graphs, pictographs, and charts

SOCIAL STUDIES

IN FLORIDA HISTORY
   knows different sources for information: i.e.,: newspapers, photographs, documents, books, and internet sites

   describes the exploration and colonization of Florida
   knows key events leading to Florida becoming a state
   understands the influence of transportation on the development of Florida
∙   understands the unique and diverse cultural make-up of Florida, both past and present
   understands the contributions of individuals on the development of Florida

IN GEOGRAPHY
   uses maps, globes, charts, graphs and timelines to gather and interpret data
∙   identifies the continents, oceans, physical and geographic regions of the United States and Florida, and the 50 states

IN GOVERNMENT AND THE CITIZEN
   defines the roles of the three branches of the state and federal government
   understands the importance of government in schools, communities, the state and nation
   understands their role as a responsible citizen
   recognizes the names of local, state and federal representatives

IN ECONOMICS
∙  
understands the relationship between available natural resources and the impact on lifestyles in different regions
   knows examples of supply and demand
   knows ways the state government provides goods and services


 

STANDARDS-BASED CURRICULUM
William S. Talbot Elementary is dedicated to the implementation of a standards-based curriculum, requiring all students to master standards composed of concepts and skills which are critical to their school success, preparing them for graduation, post-secondary education and employment.
