Have your child help with reading recipe directions.
Make newspapers, comics, and magazines available to your
     child to read.
Limit your child's television viewing and video games.
Have your child read a map while traveling in a car.
Share and discuss books and stories at home to motivate your
     children to read.

     Practice basic facts using flashcards.
Invest in mathematics games for your home computer.
Play math games with your child.

     Write a "Sentence-a-Day" story

HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH HOMEWORK-
Set up a study area where your child can do homework each day.  A good study area is quiet, comfortable, well lit, and supplied with paper and pencils.
     Schedule daily homework times.
Be around while your child is doing homework so you can give assistance, if needed.
Leave the television and music off.
If you child needs help, go through the directions together.
Help your child with the first problem or question.  Then let him finish.
Point out to your child that he/she can use resources if needed.  Have on hand a dictionary, encyclopedia, atlas, and other reference materials.
     Give lots of encouragement.
     Praise your child often.
Help your child organize assignments with a "study calendar".
If your child does not understand the directions, have him read the directions out loud.
     Check your child's homework.
If your child does not have homework on a given night, have him read or study during homework time.
Meet regularly with your child's teachers.
