READING-
Read to your child everyday!
Have your child read to you.
Visit the public library on a regular basis.
Help your child do crossword puzzles and word search
puzzles.
Have your child help with reading recipe directions.
Make newspapers, comics, and magazines available to
your
child to read.
Limit your child's television viewing and video games.
Have your child read a map while traveling in a car.
Share and discuss books and stories at home to motivate
your
children to read.
MATH-
Find things for your young child to sort.
Check your child's homework.
Practice basic facts using flashcards.
Invest in mathematics games for your home computer.
Play math games with your child.
Let your children count the change around your house.
Help your child discover shapes in everyday items in
your
home.
Have your child measure things around the house.
WRITING-
Help edit your child's stories.
Have your child keep a journal at home.
Encourage use of a diary.
Encourage letter writing to friends and relatives.
Encourage the keeping of travel logs when the family
travels.
Let your child type on the computer to make writing
easier.
Write a "Sentence-a-Day" story
Write a short poem with your child using lots of
descriptive
words.
HELPING YOUR CHILD WITH HOMEWORK-
Set up a study area where your child can do homework
each day. A good study area is quiet, comfortable, well lit, and
supplied with paper and pencils.
Schedule daily homework times.
Be around while your child is doing homework so you can
give assistance, if needed.
Leave the television and music off.
If you child needs help, go through the directions
together.
Help your child with the first problem or question.
Then let him finish.
Point out to your child that he/she can use resources
if needed. Have on hand a dictionary, encyclopedia, atlas, and
other reference materials.
Give lots of encouragement.
Praise your child often.
Help your child organize assignments with a "study
calendar".
If your child does not understand the directions, have
him read the directions out loud.
Check your child's homework.
If your child does not have homework on a given night,
have him read or study during homework time.
Meet regularly with your child's teachers.
