Talbot serves over 700 students in
grades pre-kindergarten through fifth. Committed to providing the
highest quality education possible to its students, very clear priorities
have been established for the students and families. With improved
student performance as the thrust of the School Improvement Plan, many
effective academic programs have emerged.
Key Programs and Practices:
 | Leadership activities and opportunities
are deliberately provided at every grade level. |
 | The school uses CRISS program, Creating
Independence through Student owned Strategies, and several at-home reading
programs such as "Book It." |
 | Grades 3 - 5 concentrate on reading
to learn through a basal program and Accelerated Reader. |
 | Mathematics emphasis is on explaining,
understanding, and representing. There is a Family Math night each
year for each grade level. |
 | A Phonological Awareness Program for
early reading includes an awareness program in kindergarten, small group
phonological awareness interventions in first grade for students targeted
the previous year, phonological awareness tutorial program for identified
second graders, and use of a companion reading program for all first graders
that is phonics based and focuses on sound blending. |
 | The school provides 2 - 4 uninterrupted
writing periods per week. |
 | A school priority is to provide a safe
and orderly environment for learning. |
Highlights:
Virtually every decision made is
considered in light of the school mission and priorities to provide a safe
and orderly environment, ensure maximum learning for all students, and
facilitate the development of habits and attitudes that promote responsibility,
caring, and lifelong learning and achievement. The programs at the
school are designed to promote lifelong learning and success.
A little bit of history... William S. Talbot, also known
as "Tiny" Talbot was 5'4", very portly and very personal. To quote his friend
and peer, Tommy Tomlinson, he was a "One Man Personnel Department". Whether, he
was serving as teacher/coach, principal or superintendent, he knew everyone by
name. He started in the Alachua school system, August 1, 1946 and retired
October 31, 1980. During his 36 years, he coached and served as Principal
at Sidney Lanier when it was K-6th grade, Buchholz Jr. High and finally at GHS.
He ran for Superintendent and polled the most popular votes in Alachua County
elections for his first term. He served two, four year terms as
Superintendent before retiring. As Superintendent he effectively and efficiently
assisted Alachua County's transition during the tumultuous years of segregation.
Those who served with him have many fond memories of his effectiveness as a
leader.
