Safety Patrols
The mission of the Talbot Safety Patrol is to ensure the safety of all students and maintain the flow of traffic in and around the school. Patrols assist in both the front car drop off/pickup circle, covered court, morning mile, open doors, and serve in classrooms helping teachers get ready for the school day. Fifth grade students serving as safety patrols demonstrate leadership through their academic achievement, conduct, and responsibility. In June, patrols will attend a trip to Washington, D.C. as a reward for all their hard work throughout the year.
5th Grade Reading Class Reads for the Record!!!
In September, Nancy Cochran’s 5th Grade Enrichment Reading class at Talbot Elementary School decided to conduct their own version of the popular “Million Minutes of Reading” program. Mrs. Cochran threw down the gauntlet to her 2009 class: read 108,100 minutes in the 21 days allotted for the usual Million Minutes of Reading program. And that number, 108,100, was not randomly drawn from a hat! Mrs. Cochran averaged the number of minutes her 5th grade students have read each year in the Million Minutes program from 2001 to 2008. This year, her 46 students hit the books hard and met that challenge and more. They read a total of 128,451 minutes, an average of 931 hours each week for each student! The record had been set by Mrs. Cochran’s 2006 class, but this year’s voracious readers broke that record by over 6,000 minutes!

Five Points of Life Race The race will be Saturday, February 13, 2010. Visit www.fivepointsoflife.org for more information or contact Margarita Schwiebert.
Juice Pouch Recycling We are recycling about 50 of these per day and they must be gathered from the cafeteria, cut, rinsed, dried, and packed for shipment. Any parents who want to help with this would be welcomed with open arms! It is something that could be done at home as well.
Paper Recycling We would love for parents to bring things in to add to our bins (located in centrums and the media center). Suggested items -- catalogs, newspapers -- any paper that is clean, unlaminated and dry.
Cans and Bottles We are recycling cans and bottles in Big Blues throughout the school.
Third Grade News The third grade is excited about going on a field trip to the Museum of Natural History. The topic of focus will be habitats and food chains. Students will receive a private tour. The field trip will be November 12, 13, and 19.
Congratulations to all the Thrilling Third Graders!!!
