CHAMPS / Project MASCOT

Sharing just one hour per week with an at-risk child in an area elementary or middle school could benefit you and the child in ways you never imagined.  Be a special friend for a child and change their life forever.  Project MASCOT, a companion program to CHAMPS, will also be discussed.  All mentoring sessions are held during the school day at school.  Orientation sessions and sign ups for new volunteers will be held on:

Thursday, September 10, from 7-8 p.m., Graham Residence Hall Gallery
Tuesday, September 15, from 7-8 p.m., Graham Residence Hall Gallery
Wednesday, September 16, from 8-9 p.m., Reitz Union, Room 285,  or 
Thursday, September 17, from 8-9 p.m., Reitz Union, Room 284

Please come to ONE session.  Sessions at the Reitz Union are generally more crowded.  Returning CHAMPS volunteers may contact us to re-register before September18, please.  We must have new paperwork for each volunteer every school year.  Returning volunteers may bring applications to the Volunteer Organizations Fair at the Union Colunnade from10-1 on Tuesday, September 15.  We will be at the "While you're here, VOLUNTEER" table.

Classroom Volunteers

Volunteer to help in the classroom at a school at any level.  Teachers from across the school district send in their requests for help running centers, grading papers, or assisting in the classroom.  Sign ups will be held during the times listed below.  (This process will take at least 30 minutes.)

Wednesday, September 2, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the Reitz Union, Room 361
Thursday, September 3,  from 12 noon - 5 p.m. in the Norman Hall Terrace Room
Wednesday, September 9, from 9 a.m. - 2 p.m. in the the Norman Hall Terrace Room
Thursday, September 10, from 9 a.m. -2 p.m. in Reitz Union, Room 361

New volunteers will also need to attend an orientation session which will be held on
September 9 and 10 (attend ONE!) from 4-5 p.m. in the J. J. Finley Elementary School Auditorium (1912 NW 5th Avenue, 5 blocks North of the stadium), or on Sept. 10 from 6-7 p.m. at Santa Fe College, R-001.

Afterschool Gators

Afterschool Gators work with at-risk elementary school children assisting with homework time and also helping to organize fun activities like kickball, arts and crafts, and computer time.  School assignments are based on needs of the school.  All volunteering occurs between 2 and 5:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. (Wednesday volunteering begins at 12:30 p.m.) Orientation times are as follows:

Gator Teens

These volunteers meet once per week with a student at Eastside High School to help them be more successful in school.

Mentor matches work on time management, goal setting, and other life skills that would contribute to school success.  Volunteer position are available only at the student's lunch time.   Lunch shifts begin at 11:20 a.m. and 12:15 p.m. and last for half an hour.  Please attend only one orientation session.

Rockin’Readers

Rockin’ Readers are volunteers who spend an hour each week sharing the joy of reading and the love of books with two to three individual children between the ages of 4 and 6.  Orientation and sign-ups will be held on Monday, September 14 from 3:30-5 p.m. or Tuesday, September 15 from 3:30-5 p.m. in the J. J. Finley Media Center.  J. J. Finley is located at 1912 NW 5th Avenue, which is five blocks north of the stadium on NW 19th Street.

Motiv•8 (formerly SOAR)

Volunteers work at Howard Bishop Middle School mentoring at-risk sixth-eighth grade students.  Once a week, mentors meet with their student mentees at the school for an hour for homework and fun and to provide guidance and motivation.  Our goals are to increase their self-awareness and serve as role models that will inspire them to persevere in their education.  Orientation and Sign Ups will be:
