What is Accelerated Reader?

Wiles students are encouraged to develop a love and enthusiasm for both academic and recreational reading! Accelerated Reader is a computer software program designed to assess reading comprehension and reward students for reading success. This is how it works:

1. Students select and read an Accelerated Reader book. (Many titles are available for check-out from the school library and the public library.)
2. Students take an Accelerated Reader Quiz on a school computer. (Each quiz is worth a number of points depending on the difficulty level of the book. Points are accumulated by answering more than 50% of the questions correctly.)
3. Students are rewarded for accumulation of Accelerated Reader points.

Frequently Asked Questions about Accelerated Reader

Q: How can I find an Accelerated Reader book for my child?
Accelerated Reader books in the school library are marked by a red sticker on the spine. You may look for a book by browsing the shelves or, to find a book with a specific title or reading level, by choosing from the Accelerated Reader list. You may use public library books and your own books if they are included on the AR list. AR lists are available in the school library, at the Tower Road library, and on this web site. Note: The Tower Road Library uses red stickers on some books, however this is part of a different labeling system and does NOT indicate that it is an Accelerated Reader book.

Q: How many points can students earn for each book?

Most picture books are worth 0.5 points. Most chapter books average about 1-5 points, but may vary from 1-20+ depending on the reading level of the book (determined by length and difficulty of vocabulary and concepts.)

Q: What reading level is appropriate for my child?

Reading levels of AR books begin at 1.0. Generally, 1.0-1.9 is appropriate for Kindergarten and first grade, 2.0-2.9 for second grade, 3.0-3.9 for third grade, etc. However, children differ greatly in reading development and it's best to ask your child's teacher for help determining a suitable and challenging reading level for your child.

Q: When can students take quizzes?

After a student has entirely finished reading an AR book, he or she may take a quiz at any time during the school day and at the discretion of the teacher. A student may also take a quiz before or after school in the Media Center. The Media Center is open 7:15 am - 2:00 pm. (Students may stay in the Media Center until 2:45 pm when accompanied by an adult.)

Q: Can quizzes be taken at home or at the public library?
No, students may not take quizzes on home computers or at the public library because the software is networked through our school server and licensed only for use at school.

Q: When are students awarded for Accelerated Reader points?
Students will be awarded for Accelerated Reader points on dates scheduled by the student's reading teacher.
