The International Baccalaureate ProgramThe International Baccalaureate (IB) Program is a demanding college preparatory curriculum in the classical liberal arts. Created over thirty years ago as a common university entrance credential to serve a consortium of nations under the aegis of UNESCO, the program is available today in over 600 schools in over seventy nations. One of the first IB schools in Florida, Eastside High School initiated the International Baccalaureate Program in 1983 to offer students in Alachua County the opportunity for a world class education. Over the years, we have graduated 160 National Merit Semifinalists, over 140 National Merit Commended Students, and over 200 Advanced Placement Scholars. Our students' average SAT score is 1311. Over 400 of our graduates have been Florida Academic Scholars, and we have awarded 360 International Baccalaureate Diplomas representing eighty-three percent of the students who have attempted the demanding challenge of achieving this internationally recognized certification of excellence. The Eastside success rate has been commended as one of the highest in the world, and the Eastside IB Program has been the model for many other schools in Florida and in the United States of America. The Eastside IB Program actually consists of two parts: the Pre-IB in grades nine and ten, and the formal IB for juniors and seniors. A typical IB scholar at Eastside completes four credits of study in Language A (English), four credits in Language B (French or Spanish), four credits in Individuals and Societies, four credits in Mathematics, and five credits in Experimental Sciences. The IB scholar also completes one to two credits in a sixth subject: Studio Art, Music Theory, Psychology, or Theater Arts (beginning with the 1996-1997 school term). All IB students take a course in Theory of Knowledge, complete independent research leading to an original essay of approximately 4,000 words, and document 160 hours of Creative, Active, and Service (CAS) work outside the classroom. |
Post-Secondary Recognition of the IB Diploma
"Students who elect and satisfy the IB standards in high
school are the ones best suited to benefit from the intellectual
environment at the University." Students qualify for the International Baccalaureate Diploma by pursuing a college-level curriculum including six subject areas. Three subject areas are designated "Higher Level" and three "Subsidiary Level." The students' achievement levels in each subject area are monitored by both their teachers (internal assessment) and examiners from around the world (external assessment). Students sit for a battery of IB exams in May of their junior and senior years. Diploma candidates must also submit an independently prepared Extended Essay of approximately 4,000 words. The student chooses a topic during the spring of the junior year with a mentor. The essay is completed by the end of the first semester of the senior year. Diploma candidates also complete the requirements of the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) course and the Creative, Active, and Service (CAS) Program during their senior year. Students receive the International Baccalaureate Diploma by earning a minimum of twenty-four (out of a possible 45) points based upon their performance in the six subjects of their Program, the Extended Essay, and TOK. Most Eastside students achieve the Diploma with scores in the thirty to thirty-five range. The IB Diploma is recognized by colleges and universities throughout the world for admission, advanced placement, and advanced standing. In Florida, the Diploma qualifies students for both college credit and the Florida Undergraduate Scholar's Fund, a scholarship that helps pay for college expenses at any in-state institution of higher education. Most colleges and universities now have specific policies for students who have taken IB courses and/or have achieved the IB Diploma. |
