1:1 Technology Classroom Information (Sign up by 1.11.24)

Panther families,

We are excited to announce that Newberry High School is becoming the first traditional 1:1 Technology School in Alachua County. This means every student will be given a laptop for use during their entire high school career at NHS. These assigned laptops will allow for digital textbooks and seamless transitions between classwork, testing, and homework for our students. The best part of this program is that there is no cost to any student or their family.

While transitioning from a traditional classroom to a 1:1 classroom may be a big change, the essential elements of education remain the same. This technology simply provides more tools for using and assessing student knowledge, and provides benefits to students by:

  • Increasing student engagement and participation
  • Improving student responsibility and professional development
  • Increasing student achievement in writing, problem solving, reading, and math
  • Developing information literacy and digital communication skills

There are positive impacts on teaching practices as well, as studies show that teachers shift from whole class teaching to a more group-based instruction and student-centered learning environment.

We encourage you to watch the brief video attached to this email which includes an encouraging message from our Principal, Mr. James Sheppard, and Mr. Lewis Rhodes, Program Specialist for Arts, A/V Technology and Communication and Information Technology at the ACPS District office. As the pilot program for the District, we want to provide a smooth transition for our students and families as we prepare to begin utilizing the 1:1 classroom model.

IF YOU HAVE NOT ALREADY DONE SO, please take one of the following steps to complete the registration process for each child in your household who attends Newberry High School:

  • Complete the attached Computer Agreement Acknowledgement (Updated Fall 2023) and send it back to NHS either by email or having your child turn it in to their first period teacher

OR

  • Complete the online form using the link below

It is important that all executed Computer Agreement Acknowledgement forms are returned to NHS no later than January 11th so we can complete distribution of the laptops to students. Please contact Mr. Sheppard by phone at (352) 472-1101 or by email (sheppajh@gm.sbac.edu) if you have any questions.
