What Happened: The Gainesville Lady Canes hosted Suwannee High School on Tuesday at 7 PM for their first home game of the season. Suwannee’s Brianna Stephens put her team on the board early with a run in the first inning. However, the Lady Canes' defense quickly responded, with senior Madisyn Gillins (#10) recording two key outs in the second inning to keep the score at 1-0.
The Lady Canes evened the game in the third inning when senior McKenna O’Sullivan (#51) delivered a solid hit to center field, allowing Gillins to score her first run. Momentum continued in the fourth, as senior Josie Kirwan (#13) and Adriana Koralewski (#16) crossed home plate following hits from Gillins and Braylin Cook, giving Gainesville a 3-1 lead.
Suwannee capitalized on a missed throw to first in the fifth inning, allowing Brianna Stephens (#53) and Kirsten Yaun (#2) to score and tie the game at 3-3. However, the Lady Canes' defense remained alert, with Braylin Cook (#27) executing a key play to hold Suwannee’s Addison Petersen (#17) at first and secure an out on Kinadee Lyn Lee (#3).
In the seventh inning, a wild pitch allowed Suwannee’s Yaun (#2) to score, and a missed throw to second base gave Stephens (#53) the opportunity to slide home, securing a 5-3 victory for Suwannee. Despite the final score, the Lady Canes showcased strong defensive plays and offensive execution, demonstrating their potential for the season ahead.
Star of the Game: Madisyn Gillins had a strong all-around performance in this matchup, showcasing both offensive and defensive impact. At the plate, she went 2-for-4, posting a .500 batting average, driving in one RBI, and scoring one run to help fuel the offense.
Defensively, Gillins played a key role in multiple outs, making crucial plays that kept the Suwannee in check.
