School History

  • Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Rawlings Elementary is proudly named for renowned author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings (1896-1953), who found inspiration for her novels, including Pulitzer Prize winner The Yearling, from her local surroundings in Cross Creek, Florida, which is southwest of Gainesville. Her books help bring light to rural communities and life within such. Mrs. Rawlings also taught creative writing at the University of Florida. Her home in Cross Creek is preserved for visitors to enjoy today.
