Our Cell Phone and Smart Device Policy
-
While we understand the excitement of a smart device and the convenience of being able to stay connected with your pre-teen, we need to be able to have a destraction-free campus, in order to allow our students to use the space for academic and enrichment activities. It is for this reason that we have a strict phone and smart device policy.
Cell Phones and earbuds/headphones: These devices must be powered off (not just on silent) and in the backpack from the time students arrive on campus in the morning until the dismissal bell at 2:17 p.m. This helps avoid the temptation of reaching into a pocket and "checking the time", which is what almost all students say, when they are caught looking at their phones. We ask if you need to contact your child, please contact our front office. If your child has his or her phone off during the day, a text message can be seen after the last bell. In cases of an emergency, the front office can always help contact you for your child.
Smart Watches are a growing trend for pre-teens, and this is fast-becoming the distraction that is hurting academics across the board. Please encourage your child to have the phone in airplane mode during school hours or leave it in the backpack with the phone and any other smart device.
Smart Glasses are not needed in middle school, and should therefore be left at home.
