All schools have a school advisory council that is ethnically, racially and economically representative of the community it serves. The members, including the principal, teachers and other employees, parents, community members and in some cases students, work together to improve the school. One of the major tasks of an SAC is to develop an annual school improvement plan, which outlines the school’s goals and the strategies for reaching those goals.

SAC members are selected each year, usually by their peer groups–in other words, parents select parent representatives, teachers select teachers, and so on. Most SACs meet monthly, with meetings advertised through parent newsletters, school signs and other methods. All SAC meetings are open to the public.
