A MESSAGE FROM CINDY BOULWARE,
GHS ATHLETIC DIRECTOR:The athletic program at Gainesville High School is rich with history and tradition. We continue to be proud of the team records and accomplishments of our student-athletes. We will not compromise our principles in order to win. We believe that class, character, and sportsmanship are essential to all competition, and that athletics should support the mission of the school they represent. We are not a diversion, but rather an extension of a good educational program. Students who participate in athletic programs tend to have higher grade-point averages, less discipline problems, better attendance and higher graduations rates than those who do not participate. Involvement in athletics should be inherently educational. Good programs provide valuable lessons on many practical situations; such as teamwork, leadership, giving maximum effort and learning how to win or lose graciously. By being on an athletic team students learn self-discipline, build confidence and develop skills to handle competitive situations. Knowing that our community expects the school to foster students that become productive citizens and responsible adults, we embrace the diversity of our student population and remain committed to the success of every student.
In previous years, GHS has been highly recognized on both the academic and athletic level. In addition to maintaining a solid ‘A’ grade since 2012, we have also received two of the most prestigious awards given for athletics. The Florida High School Athletic Association’s Floyd Lay All-Sports Award was given to GHS in 2012-2013 as the top 6A athletic program in the state; as well as the Florida Athletic Coaches Association Corey McDonald award for 6A Athletic Program of the Year.
Remaining a 6A classified school; our team sports are competing in a new district alignment from Fall 2019 until Spring 2020. This group of Gainesville and Ocala schools include Volusia and Marion Counties. We encourage you to challenge yourself by joining one of our 31 winning teams!!
