GHS Wins Regional Semifinals
In the regional semifinals, GHS Girls' Tennis swept the Edgewater Eagles 4-0. Junior Valentina Satankova, senior Sasha Folkers, and senior Polina Zasimovich swept at least one of their sets 6-0. None of the matches went to a third set. This Thursday, the Lady Canes will face off against Lake Buena Vista at Northside Park at 3PM. The Canes and Vipers met once before in the regular season, and the winner will advance to states. In the regional semifinals, GHS Girls' Tennis swept the Edgewater Eagles 4-0. GHS Wins Districts, Advances to Regionals!
The Canes took the trophy home this past week, clinching 1st place for the first time in their new district. They will be hosting the first round of regionals next week at Northside Park in Gainesville on Tuesday at 3PM.

Canes improve to 9-1 against Matanzas
The Hurricanes defeated Matanzas in a strong 6-1 victory Wednesday afternoon. GHS swept the singles’ matchups, with both Junior Valentina Satankova and Senior Polina Zasimovich crushing their opponents 8-1. The doubles’ matches were close, but senior duo Sasha Folkers and Zasimovich pulled out an 8-6 win for the Canes. The team has one more match this Friday against Oak Hall before heading to districts. Current rankings place them in 2nd in the district and 8th in the state.

Gainesville Fights Hard in 4-3 Loss to Lake Buena Vista
The Hurricanes fought hard in a close 4-3 loss against the Lake Buena Vista Vipers in Orlando Thursday afternoon. Junior Audrey Tierney and Senior Polina Zasimovich won their singles matches 9-7 and 8-3, respectively, to bring the match to a close 3-2 heading into the doubles match ups. Senior Gwendolyn Lauerman and Zasimovich shut out their opponent 8-0, ending the match for the Hurricanes just one game short of a victory. This marks the first loss for the Hurricanes, bringing their record to 8-1. Next week, they play their last two home matches of the season against the Matanzas Pirates and Oak Hall Eagles. GHS Sweeps Lecanto
The Hurricanes dominated Lecanto Wednesday with a 7-0 win at home. Junior Audrey Tierney and Senior Polina Zasimovish shut out their opponents in 8-0 singles games. Both doubles teams, Valentina Satankova and Audrey Tierney, and Sasha Folkers and Polina Zasimovich, won their games 8-1 and 8-2, respectively. This game adds another tally to the Canes’ 5-0 unbeaten record. They will return to action Wednesday 3/26 against Santa Fe High School.

Hurricanes Take Down the Bobcats!
Varsity Tennis beat Buchholz in a close 4-3 matchup this past Wednesday. Senior Sasha Folkers and Junior Audrey Tierney took courts 2 and 3 in the singles’ matches. Doubles’ teams dominated, as senior team Gwen Lauerman and Sasha Folkers, and juniors Valentina Satanokva and Audrey Tierney both won their matches. Satankova and Tierney prove to be a strong duo, winning all their doubles matches so far. This victory brings the team to 2-0 in a strong start to the season.

March 3: GHS Varsity Defeats Eastside Rams 5-2
Varsity Girls’ Tennis opened the season with a 5-2 win over local rival Eastside High School. Junior Valentina Satankova earned player of the match, winning 8-1 in singles and 8-2 in doubles with fellow junior Audrey Tierney. The team looks ahead to their match against their next local competitor, Buchholz.
