Youth aged 10-17 who are runaways, experiencing homelessness, truant, or not getting along with their family or guardians at home stay at our shelters, usually for 3-5 weeks at a time. While there, they participate in a social skills development program and counseling while also maintaining their routine of attending school. This is a positive, often life-changing experience for both youth and their families.

Meridian’s Crisis Services offers a full emergency screening staff who perform evaluations and crisis intervention for adults and children 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year at our Crisis Stabilization Units, located in Gainesville (Alachua County) and Lake City (Columbia County).

Crisis Services address the needs of those facing an acute episode of psychiatric illness or substance use disorder. Upon evaluation, crisis counseling may lessen the acuity, permitting referral to traditional or intensive outpatient care, or may result in admission to fully-staffed, medically-supervised, in-patient services.

UF Health Psychiatric Hospital (Formerly Shands Vista)

Formerly known as Shands Vista, UF Health Psychiatric Hospital is located on a private, picturesque, 18-acre campus that offers comfort and serenity to people in crisis.  Our 81-bed facility provides a full range of confidential, effective services.

Inpatient care on our units focuses on providing a safe, highly supervised setting for effective treatment. After an initial patient assessment, a multidisciplinary treatment team of UF Health physicians and clinicians will determine the best level of care and formulate an individualized treatment plan for each patient. The treatment plan identifies problems, interventions and goals designed to facilitate the patient’s return to the community, or to the least restrictive environment possible after discharge. Patients are included in the development of treatment plans. Treatment usually consists of medication, group therapy and case management. Because UF Health Shands Psychiatric Hospital programs often hinge on stabilization, treatment is short-term and highly focused. The goals of inpatient treatment are to stabilize the patient in crisis and address issues that immediately resulted in the need for inpatient care so the patient can function safely and with less distress outside of the hospital.

The Alachua County Crisis Center offers 24 hr/day crisis and suicide intervention phone counseling to all residents of Alachua County. Annually the Center responds to over 40,000 calls on our crisis lines.

​The Mobile Response Team (MRT) is a 24 hour emergency mobile outreach team composed of experienced staff members who respond when a person aged 25 or younger is in crisis. MRTs provide on-demand crisis intervention services in any setting in which a behavioral health crisis is occurring, including homes, schools, and emergency departments.

​In order to compliment our phone and emergency outreach systems, the Center offers appointment and walk-in counseling services during day time hours (8:30 a.m.-5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday). This short term counseling service allows continued contact for individuals in crisis and attempts to offer prevention of further emotional distress to individuals, couples and families using this service.

Alachua County Public Schools' partnership with Hazel Health means your student can get high-quality telehealth care at no cost to your family. Students can get teletherapy at school or at home on any smartphone, tablet, or computer. All Hazel Health visits are safe and confidential.

PALS THRIVE services are facilitated by a graduate or doctoral level students from Masters and Doctoral programs in psychology, mental health, marriage and family, and social work. These students are placed in our PALS THRIVE schools, and conduct individual counseling and group therapy under the supervision of licensed professionals.
