Theory of Knowledge & Extended Essay

  • The IB extended essay is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper. One component of the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) core, the extended essay is mandatory for all students. For more information, click here.

Another component of the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) core is the Theory of knowledge (TOK). TOK is assessed through an exhibition and a 1,600 word essay. Like the extended essay, TOK is mandatory for all students. Theory of knowledge (TOK) plays a special role in the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Diploma Programme (DP), by providing an opportunity for students to reflect on the nature of knowledge, and on how we know what we claim to know.
