Elementary School "I" Rezoning
As a result of the planned opening of new Elementary School I in the fall of 2021, the district is in the process of developing new attendance boundaries to populate the school. This process may affect the existing boundaries for other elementary schools in the area, specifically Archer, Chiles, Hidden Oak, Idylwild, Meadowbrook, Littlewood, Newberry Elementary, Terwilliger and Wiles.
The district has been working with a consultant to create draft proposals based on three basic guiding principles:
- The new school should have a diverse student body representative of the Alachua County population, including characteristics such as race, socioeconomics, disability, English language learners, etc.; the process should also work toward maintaining or improving diversity and community representation at the other affected schools.
- Portable classrooms at Idylwild Elementary School and in other schools in the area surrounding the new school should be eliminated as much as possible.
- These goals should be achieved while limiting disruption to as few students as necessary.
Information on five DRAFT proposals can be found here.
The district has established a special email address for input on rezoning. That address is firstname.lastname@example.org. Input can also be mailed to: Rezoning Committee, 620 East University Avenue, Gainesville, FL 32601.
Virtual and in-person input sessions have also been scheduled for each individual school (families and staff) and the general public. The sessions for the general public will be held:
October 21: 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (virtual) https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83007631469?pwd=MHVtcXNDaExpVDN5WWRlVmtEM3dnQT09#success
November 4: 4 to 8 p.m. in the School Board meeting room
A schedule of the online input sessions for individual schools is available here. Schools will provide details about those meetings to families and staff.
All school and community meetings will air on the district’s YouTube channel at:
They will also be recorded and posted to this site.
It is expected that final proposals will be submitted to the School Board for consideration in December, with a public hearing in January and a final decision to be made in February.
